The Linda Whetstone Award for Freedom and Human Rights honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage and leadership in advancing freedom, defending human rights, and challenging extremism and authoritarianism. It recognizes those whose work creates meaningful, measurable impact in promoting open societies and strengthening democratic values.
This award celebrates individuals who confront extremist ideologies not only with resilience, but with ideas, action, and integrity. Through their efforts, they foster dialogue, empower communities, and advance tolerance in environments where such values are often under threat. Recipients are selected based on the real-world outcomes of their work, their ability to drive change, inspire others, and stand firm in the face of adversity. As WAEN CEO Khalid Ramizy has emphasized, “the struggle for freedom is not an abstract idea but a daily reality, defended by real people.”
The award is presented at the Toronto Democracy Forum, a global platform that brings together scholars, civil society leaders, researchers, human rights advocates, and journalists. The forum explores civil resistance against authoritarianism and religious radicalism, while encouraging cooperation, dialogue, and practical engagement to defend democratic values and freedom in an increasingly contested world.
In addition to global recognition, the recipient receives a financial prize designed to support and expand their ongoing work. Beyond the award itself, this recognition serves as a catalyst, amplifying voices, strengthening initiatives, and inspiring others to take a stand for freedom. By spotlighting those working on the frontlines, the Linda Whetstone Award reinforces a simple but powerful message: ‘individual courage can shape collective progress.’
TDF 2025 Award Recipient: Brad Lips, CEO of Atlas Network
At the 2025 Toronto Democracy Forum, Khalid Ramizy presented the Linda Whetstone Award for Freedom and Human Rights after receiving 28 nominations from more than 10 countries. The award was bestowed upon Brad Lips, CEO of Atlas Network, in recognition of his leadership in supporting over 500 think tanks and civil society organizations across more than 100 countries.
Through his work, Lips has helped strengthen civil society organizations worldwide that focus on safeguarding individual freedom and opposing systems that restrict human rights. Reflecting on the roots of extremism, he believes:
Extremism thrives when people feel powerless. When people instead can start a business, speak their minds, and know how to hold officials accountable, they no longer seek salvation from opportunistic politicians at the expense of liberty.
During the ceremony, Khalid Ramizy invited Brad Lips to the stage to formally receive the award, presented by WAEN President Professor Ahrar Ramizpoor and WAEN Board Member Jonathan Berkshire Miller.
